It was exciting to see Go catch all those bug Pokemon, Scyther is one of my favorites, but at the same time really makes Ash look bad.

Makes Ash look like a chump, I thought wild pokemon had to be weakened first to be caught, it was in the previous seasons lore.

well that's because Goh is playing Pokémon GO unlike Ash

Yes, most likely the Pokemons Goh is catching are not very strong, just the normal average Pokemon.

While Ash wanted to become Pokemon Master, so he was only looking for strong or ones with potential to become strong and adding those. Thus those strong pokemons wouldnt simply get subdued.

Also, given the technological advancement over the series, there can also be that the Monster balls are now more powerful than the version in first series.

Ash doesn’t really catch a lot of people I mean even Gary caught more than him
